Purpose of the Course:
This 10 week Creative Writing course is for individuals starting out in the area of Creative Writing and who are
seeking to learn the skills and nuture their creative ability.
Tuition will focus on teaching techniques of prose, poetry and dramatic story telling. There will be an emphasis on
understanding of phrasing and sentence structure to convey images, build characters and develop plot.
Themes will form a starting point to nurture and encourage the student’s voice in the written form. Examples will
be used to illustrate creative idioms from literary greats such as, Joyce, Chekhov, Plaith or Hughes.
Teaching will consist of learning to understand writing as part of the creative process. Lessons will explore the
mechanics of writing to include the practice of editing and drafting and will cover the following;
- Narrative form
- Descriptive techniques and imagery
- Understanding and capturing dialogue
Where time allows students will have an opportunity to explore:
- Literary forms;
Short Stories, Poems, Children’s books, Novellas, Novels, Non-Fiction books, Memoir,
Flash-Fiction, Screenplays, Stage Plays and Radio Plays.
- Genre styles to include:
Thriller, Horror, Historical, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Crime and Western

- Tuition provided by experienced teacher and creative writer
- Facilitated class critiques to read out your work and get feedback from your peers and teacher
This course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their writing skills.
Application and Enrolment:
Application is by enrolment. Enrolment will take place on the 15th and 22nd Jan from 6pm to 8pm in Liberties
College. Payment is by cash or cheque made out to the City of Dublin ETB. Applicants will be required to enrol and pay the full fee, prior to commencement of the course.
