Purpose of the Course:
Lots of people have a desire to write yet have not begun the journey nor have they persevered because they lack the
skills to enable them to write c0-herently and with clarity.
This short course will teach the absolute essentials to enable you to start writing and express your personal story.
Firstly, you will learn how to phrase and structure your sentences. Next you will study the use of descriptive language
and learn how to flesh out character and scene. Examples of fiction will be used to help illustrate the various
techniques to develop story and link ideas.
The aim of the course is to enable you master the tools of writing so that you will gain confidence in your writing
ability. This course is suited to adult learners and those wanting to progress their interest in writing. It is also a good
pathway for those wishing to apply for arts or media courses at Further or Higher Education level.
Students will be taught the following essential writing skills:

written piece whether prose or short story has been crafted in such a way as to both make sense to and to engage the
The following will be addressed in learning the draft writing process;
1. Evaluate the 1st draft and select the salient points which you will in turn develop.
2. Rewrite, reread and hone the ideas until the logic, and the originality of your writing shines through
3. A good writer is also a good reader, don’t be afraid to dip into the major works of literature and adapt or
rephrase for your ends
To write well you need to have well researched ideas. This gives your work an authentic voice and helps to draw the
reader into your story.

What to bring
A pen and paper. Opportunities for class discussion are encouraged and students will be expected to share their
writing and contribute to the class.
This course is suitable for absolute beginners – no previous experience required.
Application and Enrolment
Application is by enrolment. Enrolment will take place on the 15th and 22nd Jan. from 6pm to 8pm in Liberties College.
Payment is by cash or cheque made out to the City of Dublin ETB, Applicants will be required to enrol and pay the full fee, prior to commencement of the course.
