8. Healthcare Assistant - Geriatric, Community Hospitals;
Intellectual Disabilty

This is the community strand of the Healthcare Asistant programme. The HCA plays a key role in teams supporting appropriate health care for people who are living in care or accessing support services in the community, due to fraility, disability or a long term need for a supported living enviroment.
This care is provided in community hospitals, nursing homes and in nursing units within caring institutions.

1 Year full-time

Entry / Work Experience

Applications for either strand is made to the HCA Programme.
Students are admitted to the common HCA Programme. Every effort is made to facilitate preferences but work experience placement in a particular area of care cannot be assured. All placements meet the full training requirements for the Healthcare Support Award and graduates are qualified to work across the healthcare sector.

Features of the course

- This community strand of the HCA programme meets a growing need for trained healthcare support staff in non-hospital settings.
- Structured work experience in community and care facilities two days per week (November to May) and in block placements.
- Course Work is active and experiential, including manual handling, first aid and the practical competences of the Healthcare Assistant in the different areas covered.

Notes: Students taking up work experience placements in health care facilities must provide evidence of vaccination against of immunity to specified conditions. Students will be required to satisty this requirement prior to placement
