Welcome
to The Bull Alley Theatre Training Company
The major component of Performance
Studies, Liberties College, now in its 14th Year. It is the principal
training Course/theatre Company in Ireland for practical, disciplined
and professional preparation for a career as an actor. The curriculum
is unique in Ireland in that it is based upon actual performance
in a syllabus structure, which proceeds through at least nine historical
acting styles and periods.
Each student participates in a
minimum of three productions in each academic year (one per term).
The final production of each year is a full-scale Broadway musical
(the only professional training opportunity in Ireland for students
of musical theatre). All performances are open to the public.
The curriculum includes practical
experience of major historical styles and periods and a weekly timetable,
which develops skills in movement/dance, text interpretation, acting/improvisation,
voice/singing and specific theoretical aspects. The emphasis is
upon ensemble work, and, in practice, most work is dependent upon
team co-operation.
Entrance to the course is through
application and audition/interview. The course commences in September
of each year. Students are guided through FETAC Level 2 in their
first year (national certification which is recognized throughout
Europe). Progress to second year, however, is not automatic. Students
are continuously assessed and dependent upon their individual progress
- their efforts in attaining FETAC certification, assessments by
an external examiner, as well as such simple but crucial factors
as timekeeping, attendance, attitude and participation in scheduled
activities - are admitted into a second year of study.
At the end of this second year,
which receives certification from the CDVEC/Education Department,
the students may apply for Third Year (Professional Studies) in
effect, a separate but linked course. Only students who have attained
and demonstrated the potential for professionalism are admitted
into the Third Year programme. A Fourth Year commences in 2004,
which fully embraces developments in contemporary drama and Theatre-In-Education
to complete an already rigorous training programme.
There is no short cut to becoming
an actor. Consequently, there is no limit to the amount of time
a student may spend in training with us. Mature students are particularly
welcome here. Students have been known to stay up to five years
as members of the Bull Alley Theatre-Training Company, gaining experience
and confidence. Each year's production programme is fresh and different.
Students are sometimes asked to repeat a particular year if their
individual development requires it. However, students whose attitude
and lack of self-discipline are incompatible with the progress of
their colleagues and their own development are released from their
obligations to the high standards of this department and encouraged
to try again elsewhere. The professional demands of the acting industries
are not to everybody's liking!
Bull Alley Theatre-Training Company
has a high success rate, in that a great many of our past students
are actively working in the theatre, television and film industries
in Ireland, Europe and further a field. The artistic ethos of Bull
Alley is manifest in the many Irish independent theatre companies,
which have been initiated by past students, and in several writers
and directors who are making their influence known today. It is
scarcely possible to open a theatre programme without reading "trained
at Bull Alley" somewhere within it.
Fees are very low for what
is offered and competition for places is strong. Application forms
for audition may be obtained from the General office, Liberties
College, Bull Alley Street, Dublin 8, or by telephoning 454-0044.
