VTOS and BEA
| In Liberties College around 20% of all students are VTOS/ BEA students. VTOS students are those students in any of our 43 full-time courses who have been unemployed or in receipt of long-term benefits and have made the decision to return to full-time education. VTOS students continue to receive all their benefits and allowances. You may be a VTOS student for a maximum 2 years, after which you can apply for BEA. You can apply to most courses as a VTOS Student if you are 21 years or older and in receipt of Social Welfare Benefit or Credits for at least 6 months before commencement date of the course OR in receipt of One Parent Family Allowance OR in receipt of Disability Allowance OR in receipt of Disability Benefit, Invalidity Payment, Widow’s/ Widower’s Pension How to Apply Complete the standard college application form available from the Admissions Office. If you receive a course place offer you will meet with the College VTOS co-ordinators Anne O’Donohue and Gavin Sheridan who will guide you through all additional procedures.

What are the advantages of being a VTOS student? 1 While studying you receive payments equal to your Social Welfare benefits, plus €31.80 per week if you have received your benefit or allowance for more than 321 days. This applies to a broad range of recipients including those receiving unemployment Assistance, Unemployment Benefit, Disability Benefit Allowance or One Parent Family Allowance. 2 You may be eligible for meal and travel allowances. 3 Books, materials and equipment are free. 4 No fees will be charged. 5 You may apply for a PLC Maintenance Grant (Maximum Grant in 2008 was €3420). This is means tested but many VTOS students qualify. What are the advantages of being a BEA student? 1 You will continue to receive social welfare payment as you do now and you will receive €400 from social welfare towards course costs. 2 No fee will be charged. 3 You may be eligible for meal & travel allowance. 4 You may be eligible to apply for a PLC grant. |
